About Crete

Crete, rugged birthplace of Zeus and ElGreco, is not only the largest of the Greek islands, it's the most southerly, moored roughly between Greece and Africa.
The island covers an area of about 85,00 square kilometers. It's length is about 250 kilometers and it's width is varying from 15 to 55 kilometers.
Crete has a character and atmosphere which is unparalled in any other part of Greece. Wild and Mountainous, it's harsh yet beutiful scenery comes as a surprise to those who expect their Greek islands to be small and resembling.
Hiring a car in Crete is very rewarding and a drive to southern coast of the island will acquant you with some very contrasting scenery and remote villages. At the most southern tip is Matala, famous for its picturesque bay and caves carved in the rocks.

Even if your idea of a holiday is to laze in the sun in the resort, it would be a pity not to try to see as much as you can on Crete as so few places can offer such wonderully different sights as the plateau of Lasithi, the magnificent Gorge of Smaraia, the glorious palm beach at Vai and the world famous Palace of Knossos.
